Time Away Privacy Policy
Time Away is an Android app developed by Ajmal Hassan K N (Ajmal Hassan). This policy describes version 0.4.0, package com.ajmalhassan.timeaway.
The short version
Time Away calculates time away from your phone on your device. Your usage information, away sessions, and preferences are not sent to the developer or third-party servers. The app has no account system, advertising, analytics SDK, advertising ID use, or cloud sync. It does not request Internet access.
Information used on your device
- Phone usage events: With your permission, Time Away reads Android usage events, including screen on/off, lock/unlock, foreground/background activity transitions, and device startup or shutdown timestamps. These events help estimate when you are using your phone and when you are away. The tracking code uses event types and timestamps; it does not save app names or a per-app usage history.
- Away sessions: Start and end times, exclusion flags, and whether a session was inferred are stored in a local database. They power your daily view, session history, weekly summaries, and home screen widgets.
- Preferences and tracking state: The app stores your minimum session duration, sleep exclusion hours, notification and appearance preferences, onboarding status, first-launch timestamp, and internal tracking progress locally. Sleep hours are a schedule you choose, not a measurement of your sleep or health.
Time Away does not read your messages, contacts, photos, browsing content, or precise location. Processing continues periodically in the background while usage access remains enabled.
Permissions
- Usage access: Allows the app to read the device events described above. You can decline or revoke it in Android Settings; without it, Time Away cannot measure your time away.
- Notifications: Optional permission for a daily summary when you enable that feature. You can disable summaries in the app or notifications in Android Settings.
- Run after startup: Allows the app to reschedule local tracking and reminders after your phone restarts.
Storage, retention, and deletion
Sessions, settings, and tracking state stay in the app's private storage on your device until removed. Time Away does not automatically expire session history. Android cloud backup is disabled for the app, and the developer has no server copy of your usage data.
To delete local app data, open Android Settings, choose Apps, Time Away, Storage, and Clear storage (wording may vary by device), or uninstall the app. Revoking usage access stops new tracking but does not by itself erase saved history. Clearing Time Away does not erase the separate usage history maintained by Android. If you use the app again and grant usage access, it may read available Android usage events again.
Sharing and third-party services
Time Away does not sell or transmit the on-device data described above. Widgets and daily summaries display information locally, including on surfaces that other people with access to your phone may see.
Google handles Google Play services, including installation and store reviews, under its own policies. This policy covers Time Away, not Google's services, your email provider, or the website hosting this policy. Visiting this webpage involves a separate request to the website host, which may process ordinary connection information such as your IP address.
Feedback and privacy enquiries
Contact us at apps@ajmalhassan.com. The app's feedback button opens your chosen email application; it does not send a message automatically or attach your usage history. If you send an email, we receive your email address and the information you choose to include and use it to respond and resolve your enquiry. Correspondence is retained only as needed for support and applicable legal obligations. You can request deletion of support correspondence at the same address, subject to those obligations.
Intended audience
Time Away is intended for people aged 16 and over. It does not ask for your age or create a user profile.
Changes to this policy
If the app's data practices change, this policy will be updated with a revised date. New features that change data handling will be described before or when they become available.
